The Different Scales of Solidarity by Ece Yetim
“The Different Scales of Solidarity” project is an alternative way of protest during the national lockdowns in various cities. It emerged in response to the right to protest during quarantine and to concerns regarding the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. As the pandemic catalyzed corruption in different institutions and widened the gap between the poor and the privileged, protests all around the world became inevitable. This drawing project highlights the fact that every citizen has the “right to reclaim the city as a co-created space” and the right to demand equality despite the pandemic. Following David Harvey’s claim of “the ideal of human rights taking a collective turn, as when the rights of workers, women, gays and minorities came to fore”, each drawing in the series, emphasizes how the pandemic exacerbated the corrupted institutions in different governments and how citizens take action in solidarity.

Ece Yetim (b. Istanbul, Turkey) is an architectural designer and illustrator who lives in Boston. She works at Höweler + Yoon Architecture, and her experience ranges from furniture design to urban scale projects in different parts of the world. She uses architectural drawing as a political medium and she is interested in the relationship between the behavioral patterns and the potentials of public spaces. She holds a Masters in Architecture from Princeton University SoA, a Bachelors of Architecture from Istanbul Technical University. Her master thesis project was awarded for The Norman D. Kurtz '58 Fund for Innovation in Engineering Education. She was the co-curator of Too Fast Too Slow Architecture Exhibition in 40 Wooster St, SoHo, NYC. She is also a member of Women in Design and Architecture in Princeton SoA.
