Mapping a Reference Vernacular by Reese Greenlee
The blocks use the rich but overshadowed history of textiles, and quilting in particular, as a framework to compose texture maps of conspicuous objects. they are diagrams following patterns with long histories, assembled with content research that focuses on the micro-collections at play in architectural practice: the reference frameworks of existing histories and theories operating for the architect, and the reference vernacular of objects surrounding the architect.

reese greenlee is an architect and educator practicing in berkeley, california. his work investigates the relationship between designer and environment as a collection of contextual influences that converge on a design process. he’s currently interested in the underlying reference frameworks of ideas and the mystical activation of materials. professionally reese works as an architectural and structural designer for endrestudio, where he conducts research and development of design tools for complex or unusual forms. he received his ms in structural engineering, mechanics and materials from uc berkeley, and bs in architecture from the ohio state university.
